Telecommunications (Administration of Digital India Fund) Rules, 2024

  • Indian Telegraph Act, 1885: The Universal Service Obligation Fund created under the Act has now been renamed as the Digital India Fund under Section 24(1) of the Telecommunications Act, 2024. 

  • It provides that funds from the Digital India Fund will be allocated for projects aimed at improving telecommunication services in deprived and remote areas and disadvantaged groups of the society.

Key provisions include:

  1. Funding for disadvantaged areas and groups: The fund will be used to improve telecommunication services in underserved remote areas and for projects focused on women, disabled, and economically and socially weaker sections.

  2. Improvement in telecommunication servicesR: Plans include expansion of mobile and broadband services, improvements in telecommunications equipment and security, and deployment of next generation telecommunications technology.

  3. Innovation and Development: Emphasis will be laid on indigenous technology, research and development, promotion of intellectual property, and encouraging startups in the telecom sector. In this, steps will be taken to increase cooperation between education, research institutions, and industry.
